J.W. Benson was among Britain’s most respected watch retailers, holding Royal Warrants and supplying fine timepieces from its London premises throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By the 1960s, the company continued to offer elegant dress watches which combined traditional British branding with high-quality Swiss and British-supplied movements, reflecting the changing landscape of post-war watchmaking.
This example is housed in a 9ct gold case signed by the British Watch Case Company, one of the principal British case manufacturers of the period. Its elegant transitional lugs retain the sculptural character of late-1950s design while introducing the cleaner, more restrained lines that would come to define the 1960s, creating a distinctly mid-century appearance.
The movement is signed by J.W. Benson and produced by Smiths of Cheltenham, Britain’s most significant post-war watch manufacturer. Smiths movements were renowned for their robust construction, excellent timekeeping qualities and high standard of finishing, representing a period when Britain remained one of the few nations capable of producing complete wristwatch movements on an industrial scale.
Combining a British-made movement, English hallmarked gold case and the name of one of London’s most historic watch retailers, this watch represents an increasingly scarce chapter in British horology. It survives as an excellent example of the quality and craftsmanship achieved during the final decades of large-scale British watch production.
