This 1993 Rolex Datejust reference 16233 is housed in the traditional 36 mm Oyster case, combining stainless steel with an 18ct yellow-gold fluted bezel, winding crown and matching two-tone Jubilee bracelet. This example presents with a sharp, neat case and a relatively tight bracelet, showing notably little stretch for its age. Its most distinctive feature is the blue vignette diamond dial, with the graduated blue finish darkening towards the outer edge. Diamond-set hour markers in yellow-gold settings are complemented by gold hands and the characteristic Cyclops date display at 3 o’clock. Internally, this reference is powered by Rolex’s calibre 3135, a 31-jewel automatic chronometer movement that became one of the manufacture’s most enduring movements.
The Datejust was introduced in 1945 to mark Rolex’s 40th anniversary and became one of the defining models in the company’s history. It was among the earliest self-winding waterproof wristwatches to display the date automatically through an aperture on the dial, with the later addition of the Cyclops magnifying lens establishing the familiar Datejust appearance. Reference 16233 arrived in the late 1980s as the successor to the 16013, retaining the established 36 mm steel-and-gold format while introducing a sapphire crystal and the newer calibre 3135. Produced throughout the 1990s, the 16233 represents an important generation of the Datejust, combining the model’s traditional proportions and styling with the more modern construction that would carry it into the following decades.
