A fine 1950s flyback chronograph wristwatch by Longines, reference 5965, powered by the celebrated calibre 30CH. Developed in the late 1940s, the 30CH was one of the firm’s most accomplished in-house chronograph movements, combining robust construction with refined finishing and precise operation. It features a traditional column wheel chronograph mechanism, ensuring the smooth engagement and crisp action associated with the finest mid-century Swiss chronographs.
The watch incorporates the flyback chronograph complication, a technically sophisticated system designed for rapid consecutive timing. Unlike a conventional chronograph, which requires the user to stop, reset, and restart the mechanism in three separate actions, the flyback allows the chronograph seconds hand to be instantly returned to zero and restarted with a single press of the reset pusher while the chronograph is running. This mechanism requires additional levers and carefully coordinated control of the column wheel, making it significantly more complex than a standard chronograph. Such watches were originally developed for professional timing applications, particularly aviation, where immediate re-timing of successive intervals was essential.
An Extract from the Archives issued by Longines confirms the production of this watch in the 1950s and records that it was originally sold to Wirth in Switzerland, reflecting the company’s established distribution network through authorised retailers.
