Produced during the 1950s, this Zodiac Régulateur Chronomètre represents a highly unusual departure from the conventional wristwatch layouts of the period. Regulator displays originated in observatories and watchmaking workshops, where the separation of the hours, minutes and seconds allowed for more precise time setting and easier reading when regulating clocks and watches. Whilst regulator dials are well known in precision clocks, they were produced only sparingly in wristwatch form during the mid-twentieth century, making original examples from established Swiss manufacturers such as Zodiac exceptionally uncommon.
This remarkable example is cased in 18ct rose gold and features a classical regulator configuration, with the hours displayed in a subsidiary register at the top of the dial, the minutes shown in a larger register below, and the running seconds arranged around the outer perimeter. Elegant blued steel hands provide a striking contrast against the dial, whilst the “Chronomètre” designation reflects Zodiac’s longstanding commitment to precision timekeeping. Surviving examples of this reference are seldom encountered, particularly in precious metal, and this unusual layout combined with its refined aesthetics makes it one of the more intriguing and elusive watches produced by the manufacture during the post-war era.
