The Rolex Day-Date 1803, introduced in the mid-1950s, was a landmark in the brand’s history as the first wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week spelled out in full. By 1967, when this particular example was produced, the 1803 reference had become firmly established as a symbol of prestige and leadership—earning it the nickname “President,” thanks in part to its association with U.S. Presidents and other heads of state. The 1803 was offered exclusively in precious metals, and this version in solid 18ct yellow gold represents Rolex’s commitment to crafting luxury timepieces with both mechanical integrity and visual presence.
The example in question features a champagne dial—a tone that subtly complements the warmth of the yellow gold case. The dials of this period often exhibit distinctive aging, such as a light patina or slight variations in texture, depending on how they were stored and worn. The baton hour markers and the classic pie-pan shape of the dial (slightly sloped at the edges) are signature elements of this reference. The acrylic crystal and fluted bezel reflect the design codes of the era, which blended elegance with functionality. Inside beats the calibre 1556, a robust automatic movement introduced in the mid-1960s, known for its reliability and precise day-date switching mechanism.
While the 1803 was most often seen on Rolex’s President bracelet, this piece is fitted with a leather strap, which gives it a more understated and versatile appearance. Leather-strapped examples were not uncommon in markets where a more discreet presentation was preferred, or they may have been retrofitted to suit changing tastes. Either way, it emphasizes the classic dress watch proportions of the 36mm case and allows the gold case and dial to take visual prominence. As vintage appreciation has grown, the 1803 remains a sought-after reference—bridging the gap between mid-century Rolex craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of the Day-Date line.
This is the first watch from our collection to feature our handmade, full grain leather in-house watch straps.
