Introduced during the 1960s, the Rolex Datejust reference 1600 offered a more understated interpretation of Rolex’s iconic Datejust. Unlike its fluted or engine-turned counterparts, this reference featured a smooth polished bezel, giving the watch a clean and refined appearance that has become increasingly sought after by collectors. Produced during a golden era of Rolex manufacturing, this 1970 example is powered by the renowned Rolex Calibre 1575 automatic movement, celebrated for its chronometer-certified precision, robust construction and exceptional reliability. The watch is presented on a leather strap fitted with a genuine Rolex pin buckle, offering a classic and elegant alternative to the traditional Oyster bracelet.
Perhaps the greatest highlight of this example is its exceptional silver linen Sigma dial. Linen dials were manufactured using a finely engraved texture that catches the light beautifully, creating remarkable depth and character while remaining unmistakably subtle. The Sigma symbols positioned either side of the “T SWISS T” signature denote the use of solid gold hour markers and hands beneath their steel finish, a feature introduced during the early 1970s to highlight the use of precious metals.
