The Rolex Explorer reference 14270, introduced in 1989 and continuing into the mid-1990s, marked a significant update to the lineage that began with the famous Explorer 1016. By 1995, the model had firmly established itself as the modern incarnation of Rolex’s mountaineering watch, retaining the 36 mm Oyster case and the hallmark 3-6-9 dial while incorporating a number of contemporary refinements. Most notably, the 14270 replaced the matte painted dials of earlier Explorers with glossy black lacquer and applied white-gold indices filled with tritium lume, giving the watch a more luxurious and legible aesthetic. The sapphire crystal and improved case finishing reflected Rolex’s broader transition into a modern era, bridging the rugged simplicity of tool watches with the growing demand for refinement in sports models.
Inside, the watch was powered by the calibre 3000, part of Rolex’s then-new generation of automatic movements.
