Updated specifically for the black dial, two-tone 16613:
Introduced in the late 1980s, the Rolex Submariner Date reference 16613 represented a significant evolution of Rolex’s two-tone professional dive watch, succeeding the earlier reference 16803. This 2001 example combines a 40mm stainless-steel Oyster case with an 18ct yellow-gold bezel, winding crown and centre links, a combination Rolex describes as Yellow Rolesor. The black dial is paired with a matching black aluminium diving bezel, giving this version a more restrained appearance than the well-known blue 16613 while retaining the Submariner’s familiar Mercedes hands, luminous hour markers and date display beneath a Cyclops magnifier.
Inside is Rolex’s calibre 3135, the automatic chronometer movement that became one of the manufacture’s longest-serving and most widely respected movements. Introduced in 1988, it operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and features a quick-set date, free-sprung balance with Microstella regulation and approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Combined with Rolex’s Triplock screw-down crown and Oyster case construction, the 16613 was originally rated to a depth of 300 metres, maintaining the functional specification expected of the Submariner despite the addition of 18ct gold.
A 2001 example occupies an interesting position in the history of the reference. By this period Rolex had begun fitting the 16613 with the later Oyster bracelet and solid end links, creating a more substantial connection between case and bracelet than on earlier examples. It also belongs to the post-tritium era, using luminous material on the dial and hands while retaining the aluminium bezel insert, relatively slender 40mm case and clean, unengraved rehaut associated with the classic pre-ceramic Submariner. The 16613 would remain in production until the end of the decade, when it was succeeded by the larger-feeling, ceramic-bezel reference 116613.
