Introduced as part of Omega’s modern Speedmaster collection, reference 311.30.44.51.01.002 represents a distinctly contemporary interpretation of the famous Moonwatch formula. Rather than reproducing the hand-wound Professional, this Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph combines the familiar black dial, tachymeter bezel and twisted-lug case with a larger 44.25mm format and automatic movement. The result retains the visual language established by the Speedmaster during the 1960s while reflecting Omega’s considerable advances in movement technology by the time this example was produced in 2017.
The 44.25mm stainless-steel case is fitted with a black ceramic bezel carrying a Liquidmetal tachymeter scale, providing a notably more durable alternative to the aluminium inserts traditionally associated with the Speedmaster. Beneath the sapphire crystal, the dial uses a two-register arrangement, with the register at three o’clock combining the chronograph hours and minutes on a single subdial, while running seconds occupy the register at nine and the date is discreetly positioned at six o’clock. This example remains in exceptional condition, retaining a particularly sharp and well-preserved appearance throughout. It is accompanied by its original presentation box, paperwork and cards, making this a notably complete 2017 example.
Inside is Omega’s calibre 9300, an automatic Co-Axial column-wheel chronograph movement developed during an important period in Omega’s move towards increasingly manufacture-led movement production. It incorporates a silicon balance spring, twin mainspring barrels and approximately 60 hours of power reserve, with the movement visible through the sapphire display back. The calibre 9300 brought substantially modernised engineering to the Speedmaster family while retaining the character and functionality of Omega’s best-known chronograph.
