Introduced in 2015, the Cartier Clé de Cartier represented a new direction within Cartier’s long tradition of shaped wristwatches. Its name, Clé—French for “key”—refers to the distinctive winding crown, whose elongated form was inspired by the keys once used to wind early clocks and pocket watches. Reference WGCL0013 is executed in 18ct rose gold, with the softly curved case and integrated lugs giving this a character quite distinct from the more angular Tank and Santos families. The silvered dial retains familiar Cartier signatures, including bold Roman numerals, blued-steel sword-shaped hands and the traditional chemin-de-fer minute track.
This 2018 example is powered by Cartier’s calibre 1847 MC, an automatic manufacture movement introduced alongside the Clé collection. The calibre takes its name from Cartier’s founding year of 1847 and was developed as a robust everyday movement, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour and providing approximately 42 hours of power reserve. The unusual crown is more than a stylistic detail: its rectangular form is designed to be turned like a conventional crown while naturally returning to its aligned position against the case.
Presented in immaculate condition, this example is accompanied by its original Cartier box and papers, making it a particularly complete example of the reference. It remains fitted with its 18ct rose-gold Cartier-signed buckle, an important original detail that complements the precious-metal case. The Clé was produced for a comparatively short period within Cartier’s modern catalogue, and WGCL0013 combines the house’s established design vocabulary with one of its more distinctive contemporary case and crown designs.
