Introduced in 2021, this Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, reference 310.32.42.50.01.001, represents one of the most significant developments of the traditional Moonwatch in decades. The Speedmaster itself dates to 1957, originally conceived as a precision chronograph for motorsport and scientific timing, before its association with space exploration transformed its identity. Following extensive testing, NASA qualified the Speedmaster for manned space missions in 1965, and in July 1969 a Speedmaster Professional accompanied Apollo 11 to the lunar surface. The modern reference deliberately draws upon this heritage, retaining the familiar 42mm asymmetric stainless-steel case, Hesalite crystal and solid case back while reinstating period details including the stepped black dial and the celebrated “dot over 90” tachymeter bezel.
At the heart of this generation is Omega’s manually wound calibre 3861, which replaced the long-serving calibre 1861 in the standard Moonwatch collection. While preserving the hand-wound architecture that has long characterised the Speedmaster Professional, the 3861 introduced Omega’s Co-Axial escapement and Master Chronometer certification to the regular-production Moonwatch. The movement offers approximately 50 hours of power reserve, hacking seconds and resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss, bringing considerably more modern chronometric performance to a watch that remains deliberately traditional in appearance. Importantly, Omega resisted fundamentally redesigning the Moonwatch: the black tri-compax dial, Hesalite crystal, aluminium tachymeter bezel and manually wound movement maintain a direct visual and mechanical connection with the Speedmasters of the Apollo era.
This example is fitted to an Omega-signed black NATO strap, a particularly appropriate pairing for the functional character of the Moonwatch, and is accompanied by its full set of original box and papers. The watch remains in fabulous, sharp and apparently unpolished condition, preserving the definition and original geometry of its stainless-steel case. Reference 310.32.42.50.01.001 is the Hesalite and solid-case-back configuration of the calibre 3861 generation, arguably the specification most closely connected aesthetically with the historic Moonwatch while incorporating the substantial technical advances of Omega’s modern movement technology. It is a thoughtful continuation of the Speedmaster rather than a reinvention: recognisably descended from the chronographs used during the Apollo programme, but engineered to contemporary standards.
