Introduced in 2010, the Calibre de Cartier ref. 3389 marked a major turning point in Cartier’s modern watchmaking. It was the first men’s model to debut the in-house Calibre 1904-PS MC automatic movement — a twin-barrel design engineered for consistent torque and precision. The 42 mm case, with its bold lugs, stepped bezel, and deeply recessed crown guards, reflected Cartier’s ambition to create a contemporary sports-luxury watch distinct from the maison’s long tradition of dress pieces. Its silvered guilloché dial, sword-shaped hands, and prominent Roman numerals retained Cartier’s classical DNA, while the small-seconds display and subtle date aperture added functional balance.
Early examples such as this one, dating from around 2011, illustrate the first generation of the Calibre line before the later Diver and Chronograph variants were introduced. The solid caseback with engraved “Calibre de Cartier” branding, sapphire crystal, and meticulous finishing showcased Cartier’s renewed focus on in-house craftsmanship and technical legitimacy within Swiss horology. Today, the ref. 3389 is viewed as the model that re-established Cartier as a true manufacture — bridging its heritage of refined design with a new era of mechanical innovation and masculine modernity.
