Dating from the early 1970s, this J.W. Benson dress watch was presented to R.S. Markham upon the completion of forty years’ service with the Carpet Manufacturing Company Ltd, as recorded by the engraving to the case back. Such long-service presentations became increasingly popular during the post-war decades, with quality gold wristwatches often chosen to mark significant milestones in an employee’s career. As a result, watches such as this provide not only a fine example of British-branded watchmaking, but also a tangible connection to the working lives and achievements of their original owners.
The watch itself is a particularly attractive example.
