The Cabot Watch Company (CWC) W10 was supplied to the British Army during the latter years of the Cold War, serving as a practical and dependable timepiece for military personnel. Introduced in the mid-1970s as a successor to earlier Army-issued watches from makers such as Smiths and Hamilton, the W10 was built to a Ministry of Defence specification that prioritised durability, legibility and ease of maintenance. Its simple black dial, luminous markings and hacking seconds function allowed troops to synchronise operations accurately, an essential requirement in military service.
This example dates from 1979, the final year of mechanical W10 production. At its heart is a hand-wound ETA movement, chosen for its reliability and straightforward servicing. The fixed strap bars, tonneau-shaped case and highly legible dial were all features dictated by military requirements rather than fashion, resulting in a watch that was purpose-built for field use. During this period, W10 watches were issued to a wide range of British Army personnel, from infantry soldiers and engineers to communications specialists and officers serving both in the United Kingdom and overseas.
Today, the 1979 CWC W10 is regarded as one of the most desirable British military watches of the post-war period. As the last generation of hand-wound Army-issued wristwatches before the widespread adoption of quartz technology, these watches represent the end of an important chapter in British military horology. Their direct connection to military service, combined with their robust construction and unmistakably utilitarian design, has ensured enduring popularity among collectors of both military memorabilia and vintage wristwatches.
